Fulani Basket

← Back to search
  • Title Fulani Basket
  • Category Utilitarian
  • Medium Woven Grasses
  • Dimensions 15.5"h x 21.5"w x 19"d
  • Notes Although this basket is large, baskets were made to be carried on one’s head. This specific basket is unusual in design because of its irregular triangular as opposed to semi-circular shape. Baskets were typically made by women out of native grasses of the area. They are used in daily life for food storage and food transportation. Like many other African baskets, this basket only recently became regarded as an art piece*. *Enid Schildkrout, “Grass Roots: African Origins of an American Art.” (African Arts, vol. 42, no.2, 2009), 44-55.
