  • Notes Basketry, like calabash arts were made from natural materials and used commonly for food practices*. It is important to note that baskets were made to be worn out and were still not considered as an art form around the time the Matters received this piece. Attention to baskets like this began to be garnered when more care was placed on their craftmanship and design. This basket was made through the coiling process. Rice was a dietary staple in Ghana starting from the 11th century, so it is probable that this basket was intended for containing rice. *Enid Schildkrout, “Grass Roots: African Origins of an American Art.” (African Arts, vol. 42, no.2, 2009), 44-55.
