The Sahel is typically extremely hot, sunny, and dry, thus, the need for a hat such as this. The Fulani are nomadic peoples, constantly migrating and caring for herds, thus a lot of art associated with them is primarily woven pieces made from natural materials*. The hat is commonly worn with a turban underneath it and kept on with the chin strap. The hat is conically shaped and has a knob at the top with the addition of a tassel on the chinstrap. *G.W.
