- Notes The mortar and pestle are used for threshing, grinding and pounding grains, nuts, yams, cassava and other common root vegetables. They are common kitchen utensils in a traditional African setting. These objects are commonly given as gifts to newlyweds*. Some pestles are made as large as 1.23 meters and often take two women pounding alternately to make a daily meal. *D.A.
