  • Notes Deb Stoner is an active fine art photographer with deep roots in crafts. She earned a BS in Geology from UC Davis, and after many years of bench work as a jeweler learning technical skills, she went on to San Diego University and earned an MFA in Jewelry/Metals. 1989 an Artist-in-Residency position at the Oregon School of Arts and Crafts brought her to Portland, Oregon where she still lives and works. Although Stoner is “intrigued and informed by the work of 16th century European floral still life painters,” as stated in her artist statement, “my current work is more inspired by the tangled and complex compositions of Bosch and Bruegel. As an artist in love with all things photographic, I work by placing objects directly on the horizontal glass of a high-resolution flatbed scanner.” Her work involves keeping an open mind as she uses her skills as a photographer, researcher and a gardener to make still-life photographs. Her work has been funded by the Regional Arts and Culture Council, the Oregon Arts Commission through grants and a fellowship, and a diverse group of enthusiastic collectors who find joy in her artistic endeavors. Deb is known for her work in designing and making eyewear from a jeweler’s point of view, for developing new ideas in eyewear for the fashion industry, and for teaching those ideas to students in over fifty workshops at craft centers worldwide.
