  • Medium Wood
  • Dimensions 17"h x 6"w x 4"d
  • Notes This sculpture reflects the frustration and futility felt by these primarily Jewish peoples that faced persecution from Kenya and Tanzania. This sculpture is likely made from African blackwood, and the designs are more modern. This sculpture bears similarity to the carving genre of giligia, a sculpture type created by Chanuo Maundu, a renowned Makonde sculptor who lived mid-1930’s-1994.* Like the giligia sculpture, this sculpture has protruding eyes and frightening teeth projected outside of the mouth. Sculptures like this are meant to evoke a sense of fear. Makonde art also tends to reflect a reaction to England's Christian missionaries.* *Micheal Stephen, “Makonde: Sculpture as Political Commentary.” (Review of African Political Economy, no. 48, 1990), 106-15. *Zachary Kingdon, “Chanuo Maundu: Master of Makonde Blackwood Art.” (African Arts, vol.29, no. 4, 1996), 56-96.
