  • Notes The subject in this picture is a priest of Tigrigna ethnic stock serving in the Tewahedo Oriental Orthodox Church. The majority of Christians in Eritrea are part of this church, which is also known as the Coptic Church because of its official ties to the ancient Coptic Church in Egypt. On a spiritual level, the priest leads the daily services, prayers, and rituals that bring the divine into the lives of the people. Priests serve as the link between the laity, saints and the angels who convey the concerns of the people to God. Priests are also leaders in times of feasts and fasting.
