  • Notes The girl within the picture is identified as coming from the small Bilen ethnic group in the Eritrea central highlands. Bilen women wear gold, silver or copper nose rings which indicate their wealth and social status. The ethnic markers in the portrait are the characteristic nose ring, long tightly braided hair, hairpiece, beaded necklace and henna marking on the girl’s cheeks and forehead.
