- Notes Twin clapperless bells are an ancient and common emblem of chiefly authority in Central Africa. The bells originated north of the equatorial forest, spreading into the South Savanna before 1400 CE. Made from forged iron, the double bell is played by striking it with a wooden stick. Depending upon where the bell is struck and how it is held, the tone and timbre vary. The bells send messages and announcements and are often used for divination.
