- Notes For centuries the Zulu people in the Kwazulu-Natal region of South Africa have crafted baskets using palm fronds, banana bark and grasses. This Ukhamba basket is used to keep and cool locally brewed beer. Primarily woven by women, the basket coils are made with strips from the fronds of the ilala palm tree. Often baskets such as this are given as wedding presents.
