  • Title Safari Van
  • Category Toy
  • Medium Mixed Media (metal, wire and wood)
  • Dimensions 7"h x 3.5"w x 3"d
  • Year Completed Undated
  • Notes This toy van is a replica of the type of vehicle that transports visitors on African wildlife tours. The car has a roof that lifts just as in real life to allow tourists to stand up. The graphics, giraffe, zebra striping, acacia trees, and featureless figures reflect stereotypical perceptions of Africa. “Hakuna Matata” is written on the van as The Lion King had popularized the phrase worldwide, and sellers used this term to convince buyers. The words “Tours to Mukumi” refer to Tanzania’s fourth largest game reserve.
