  • Notes Predating woven fabrics, bark cloth is potentially history’s oldest textile. Traditionally in Uganda bark cloth was produced by specialists under the guidance of a chief craftsman. The making process involves harvesting large sheets of inner bark from the "Mutuba" tree. The bark is then moistened and beaten with heavy wooden mallets until soft. In Buganda, bark cloth was used as clothing by both men and women who wrapped a full piece around their bodies. Bark cloth is used in daily life in addition to funerals, coronations and healing rituals.
