  • Notes Ox plowing is deeply integrated into Ethiopian society to the extent that Ethiopians are often referred to as people of the plow. Ox plowing was important for the development of the Ethiopian state as cereal crops led to wealth accumulation and tax collection. Ploughing originated in the north, where the climate is drier and less days are available for land preparation. The oxen used for ploughing are castrated bulls who pull the 'maresha' or the plough. The 'maresha' does not turn the soil over, leaving crop residue decreasing soil erosion.* * Aune, Jens B., et al. “The Ox Ploughing System in Ethiopia: Can it be sustained?” Outlook on Agriculture, vol. 30, no. 4, 4 Nov. 2001, pp. 275–280.
