- Description This very carefully made thumb piano has 8 tines or keys. Although some versions have up to 17 tines, the outer keys then become so small as to be almost unplayable. Unlike a western piano in which the keyboard is arranged from low notes on the left to high notes on the right, the African thumb piano places low notes in the center and high notes on each side. Each tine on this thumb piano has a small metal rattle and the box contains stones or seeds that also produce a rattle.
