  • Description Variants of this percussion instrument are found throughout West Africa and also in Latin America where they were introduced by African slaves. In Liberia, where it is called a saasaa, it is the most commonly used instrument next to drums. The body of the saasaa is made from a vine gourd which is dried for several months. After the pulp and seeds are removed, the gourd is covered with loose netting strung with beads or cowries. When shaken or struck, the saasaa produces a distinct loud and rhythmic rattling sound. In Liberia the saasaa is played by women to accompany singing and dancing. In other parts of Africa it is played by both men and women.
