  • Notes The xalam is played in Mali, Gambia, Senegal, Niger, Norther Nigeria, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mautania and Western Sahara. In its standard form, it is a simple lute chordophone with one to five strings. The instrument's tuning can be adjusted by moving the leather strips. Many xalam players assemble their own instrument after a woodworker carves the body, neck and bridge. Traditionally, the xalam is played by male griots, praise singers who are born into the profession. Played as a solo or duo instrument, it may accompany praise songs and historical recitations. It also may form part of a larger group including kora, drums and calabashes. It is traditionally heard at weddings, infant naming ceremonies, and (always with amplification) is now a common member of folklore ensembles.
