Written accounts as early as the 1850’s refer to small stone statues dug out of the ground when farmers were preparing their fields. The local Kissi denied making them, saying the carving had been left by God. The Kissi believe the statue to have supernatural powers, thus offerings are made to them in hopes of gaining protection, good luck and bountiful harvests.
