  • Description Fly whisks are a common item of chiefly regalia in almost every part of Africa. While traditional chiefs and monarchs wielded the whisks, in modern times presidents Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya and Hastings Banda of Malawi frequently carried these symbols of authority. In 1827, the Ottoman Dey (governor) of Algeria struck a French official in the face with a fly whisk. The French used the incident as an excuse to invade and colonize Algeria in 1830.
