  • Description Late one night in 2007, James "Jay" Olsen, a drunk off-duty Spokane police officer used his own gun to shoot Shonto Pete, a young Native man in the back of the head on a downtown street. The policeman was wrongfully accusing the man of trying to steal his pickup. The man was charged with disorderly conduct and attempted theft, but later found not guilty. Under review by the Spokane Police Department, the officer resigned. At his trial the officer was acquitted of a charge of assault. The young Native man and Ric Gendron are close friends.
