- Notes This is a painting from an Ethiopian manuscript depicting Mary enthroned with baby Jesus. This piece is likely to be in the first Gondarine style, recognized by an absence of shading, use of bright colors, well defined contour lines and a plain coral red for skin.* The Ethiopian church originated in Alexandria, Antioch and South Arabia. The Church of Alexandria is thought to have simply Christianized a single Ethiopian king and court. The founders of Ethiopian Christianity are the traditional nine saints from ‘Rum’ likely to be Northern Syria. The Ethiopian Church holds an interest in the pictorial arts expressed in church wall decoration, in illuminated manuscripts, and in paintings like this.* CHOJNACKI, STANISLAW. “Short Introduction to Ethiopian Traditional Painting.” Journal of Ethiopian Studies 2, no. 2 (1964): 1–11.
