  • Description This painting depicts the meeting of Azeb, Queen of Sheba, with King Solomon of Israel. Dressed in royal robes, both monarchs wear crowns and carry scepters. Servants dressed in white hold an umbrella and a fly whisk, symbols of authority and regal status. A third servant stands watch behind a finely dressed, but barefoot court official whose headdress is made from a lion’s mane. As in traditional Coptic art, eyes are prominent, subjects are dressed in flowing robes, and images take on a triangular shape that is broader at the bottom. Reflecting traditional art, the dominant colors are solid blues, reds, yellows, browns, whites, and greens. The picture of Solomon and Azeb is set within a red and white border which is itself surrounded by the brown hair of the animal hide canvas. This picture is a popularized representation of Coptic iconography, intended for sale to tourists.
