  • Notes Series: Ground Divine with Time This body of work leans into the recognizable, but it is as imperfect as a memory. Through the marks and smears of my pencils and oilbars, I invite the viewer into the tissue of the landscape where the cement steps are still warm in the evening and the bees are circling the hollyhocks and you are thinking about something else entirely. This is the lived experience of the landscape. I use color to heighten emotion and provide places to wander. Sometimes sidewalks really are pink and we might not notice it. Sometimes we just want them to be pink. Sometimes we remember them as pink when they were actually gray. Through color, I attempt to express the truth of experience. And teeter into ambiguities. Is that a winter sky? Is it a new bursting day or a fiery sunset? Or a real fire? Fallout? Or just another day? Is that sickly blue a reflection from a clear sky or a rock with copper adsorption? “Notice how like the riprap’s disjointment eventually joins, cemented by dust and the pressures of moonlight, we come to be from here.” ~ Adrian Kien
