- Notes Robert Motherwell, an abstract expressionist painter and printmaker, was born in Aberdeen, Washington. He developed an early interest in art and earned a fellowship to the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles at age 11. He studied at the California School of Fine Arts and Stanford University, where he earned a B.A. in philosophy and literature in 1937 and did graduate work at Harvard University. Encouraged by Meyer Schapiro at Columbia University to focus on painting, Motherwell made it his primary vocation after a 1941 trip to Mexico with surrealist painter Robert Matta. Motherwell's work was influenced by European Surrealist automatism, featuring simple shapes, bold color contrasts, and a balance between restrained and gestural brushstrokes. His art engaged with themes from art history, philosophy, contemporary events, and the human condition. He became an extremely influential figure in the New York Ab-Ex scene and until his death in 1991, he continued painting, lecturing, and exploring the themes central to his life and work.
