  • Notes This print is one of two pieces in the collection with named artists. “Fulani Shepherd” by Toyin Oguntona was made in Nigeria presumably in the mid 60’s. The Shepherd as seen in the image wears a woven hat and carries a calabash dipper over his shoulder. The woven hat is characteristic of the Fulani peoples*. The Fulani herdsmen wore cone shaped hats with wide brims and knobs at the top (Search "Fulani Hat" in the Matters Collection). This is to ensure men's protection in the dry and hot environment. The man carries his calabash, a bottle gourd presumed to hold water, with him, as the Fulani are a nomadic group who often migrate and care for their herds. Oguntona has shown works in Great Britain and the U.S. as well as Africa. *G.W. Webster, “Customs and Beliefs of the Fulani: Notes Collected During 24 Years’ Residence in Northern Nigeria.” (Man, vol. 31, 1931), 238-44.
