  • Description Harold Balazs was a sculptor and artist known for creating large, abstract metal sculptures and other public art installations in various materials. He was born in Ohio, however he and his family moved to Spokane, specifically Mead, Washington, in the 40’s. Balazs’ work is diverse, ranging from enamel to painting, and primarily concerned with public art such as sculpture or mural. Many of his works are prominently featured in Spokane’s public spaces, such as the Rotary Fountain in Riverfront Park. Balazs was an “artist for the architects” as he was willing to create in nearly any medium while also being affordable. He and his wife Rosemary built a barn studio named Mead Art Works where younger artists would often trade their labor for Balazs’ mentoring. Balazs signature phrase was “Transcend the bullshit” which made its way into any number of his pieces.
