- Notes Harold Balazs was a legendary and beloved Spokane figure. Balazs was well known in the Spokane area for his 1978 Centennial Sculpture, which appears to float on the Spokane River in Riverfront Park, and for the Chinese-lantern concrete sculpture behind the Spokane Opera House. Balazs' works have also been featured in Coeur d'Alene's annual Art on the Green celebration and are known throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska and Montana. In his 45-plus years of creating art, Balazs spent three terms as a Washington state arts commissioner. Balazs created the print "A Thing Examined" in conjunction with the installation of this public sculpture in Whitworth's Harriet Cheney Cowles Memorial Library courtyard; the courtyard was designed by Northwest Architects to feature just such an artwork. The sculpture was dedicated Sept. 27 in library courtyard as part of Whitworth's Homecoming Weekend festivities.
