  • Notes John L Harter was a painter born in Seattle, Washington. In his later years, Harter lived and painted on a parcel of land on a Native American reservation near Marysville Washington where he would stay until he died. Harter studied at Seattle Central Community College, Cornish College of the Arts, the San Francisco Art Institute and the University of Washington. Harter, in his paintings, deals with both surrealistic and figurative paintings. He views light as a source of major significance in his artwork. His paintings use bright bold colors, geometric forms, and precise lines. As seen in his painting Memorial Metamorphosis Art Show and other pieces, fingers are a recurrent motif in his art.
