- Description Barbara Brotman was a well-known pottery artist in the Pacific Northwest. Brotman was mostly a self-taught potter however, she attended pottery workshops taught by well-known ceramicists Antonio Prieto (1912-1967), Peter Volkous (1924-2002), Ben Sams (1945-2002), and Don Rietz (1929-2014). She started her ceramics career in 1960 and was known for her hand thrown pottery bowls, chargers, and vases. Her pieces were made with abstract designs and colorful textual glazes that echo Abstract Expressionism. Brotman exhibited her pottery at various local northwest craft shows and exhibited in the Weaver’s Guild Clay Club Exhibition in 1960, Bellevue Arts and Crafts Fair, NW Craftsmen, Museum of Contemporary Crafts New York City, Museum of Southern California Craft Exhibition 1961 and the Fry Art Museum.
