• Notes Jose Guerrero is a leader of the mural movement in Chicago and is recognized as one of the cutting-edge Latino artists in America. Guerrero has worked with the Chicago Mural Group and on independent mural projects in Chicago and Mexico. He met with Whitworth's Prejudice Across America study-program groups in 1998, 2001 and 2003 to share his work and lead Whitworth students on walking tours of Pilsen, a working-class neighborhood in Chicago. Guerrero created six separate editions of prints while he was in residence at The Loop Press, using linoleum-block relief prints as his primary medium. He draws upon the strong tradition of using this medium to create rapidly printed protest pictures in Mexico and other Latin American countries. His imagery is related to social-justice concerns. He takes an edgy, humorous approach to communicating his protests against racism, urban gentrification, and current national-security policies. Guerrero has an interest in the history of the labor movement, so much of his work emphasizes the need for working people all over the world to work together for their communal well-being.
