  • Notes Sironka’s work is a commentary on the Maasai, his people’s way of life. When a man marries in Maasai culture he will be expected to reward the bride's family with several cattle, sheep, and goats. Most Maasai families will have a stipulated number of animals expected for the husband to provide and gift as thanks for their daughter’s hand in marriage. The Maasai take great care of their animals, as the act of killing and eating a wild animal is taboo. *Sironka, Nicholas. A Gift from God?: Batik Art on the Maasai Culture, 2000.
